This semester, we have the honor of profiling some of the incredible professional artists involved in the TDM spring production. Our next artist spotlight shines on Emily Majors! Emily worked alongside Darien Carr to design the installation in the Smith Center for I Have a Door Up There. Check out more of Emily’s work at https://www.emilymajors.com/.

What inspires you as an artist and creative?

Our world is desperately in need of change- in the ways we live, the ways we work, and the ways we play. The design of the built environment has the power to be an agent for initiating or encouraging change in these areas. I am inspired by the potential for architecture to improve the systems and infrastructures we operate within as humans and by design’s ability to enhance the way humans interact with each other.

What excites you about this original TDM production, I Have A Door Up There?

I was ecstatic to join this project because the topic of grief is incredibly relevant right now with all of the global loss and hardship we have experienced in the last few years. Working with the team to develop an installation that can serve as a backdrop and interface for this topic was meaningful and powerful work that intends to inspire and heal others. I don’t get a chance to engage with work so closely tied to human emotions in architecture very often so this installation was incredibly refreshing to be a part of.

How has it been co-creating with the TDM students and the collaborating artists?

This has been one of my favorite projects to work on because this production was totally centered around humanity. We need more of this, especially in the design field. From the topic at hand to the way everyone treated each other on the team, there was so much respect and kindness flowing through the entire production.

What projects are you working on next?

I am actually transitioning into a new job as a facilities designer with the electric vehicle company, Rivian. I am so excited to work on a project that will respond to the issues surrounding the climate crisis!
