This semester, we have the honor of profiling some of the incredible professional artists involved in the TDM spring production. Our next artist spotlight shines on Cha See, Lighting Designer / Lighting Design Consultant for I Have a Door Up There. Check out more of Cha’s work at www.seelightingdesign.com.

What inspires you as an artist and creative?

Every show is a different process and that already inspires me. Each show has its own story to tell and as a designer not only I see myself as a visual storyteller but a problem solver as well.

What excites you about this original TDM production, I Have A Door Up There?

What excites me about this is every design department is doing this for the first time. It pushes the boundaries on how theatre makers tell their stories without the actual medium- theatre. Our team has jumped off a cliff not knowing what to expect. Cha See, an Asian woman in glasses and a brightly colored button down, holds her hands up in finger hearts.

How has it been co-creating with the TDM students and the collaborating artists?

It was truly a JOY! I say this because I learned so much from them as much as they learned from me. I Have a Door Up There reminded me that it is okay to take my time as an artists and not hustle hustle hustle. That it is okay to just let the process unfold by itself.

What projects are you working on next?

I am in pre-production for What To Send Up When It Goes Down to be presented by BAM at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. And an outdoor Tango show which I am truly excited about!
