TDM Artist Spotlight: Callie Chapman

Each semester, we have the honor of profiling some of the incredible professional artists involved in our TDM productions. Our next artist spotlight this spring shines on Callie Chapman! Callie is the Media/Projection Designer for this semester’s Harvard Dance Project. Check out more of Callie’s work at www.calliechapman.com and www.zoedance.org.

What inspires you as an artist and creative?

Inspirations come in waves of different sorts ranging from intellectual, sensual, experiential, and emotional. What interests me as an artist is taking that inspiration and transforming it so it can be shared with others.

What excites you about this year's Harvard Dance Project?

Working with the whole team has been a bright light in these recent months leading up to this performance. I am honored to be working with such beautiful creators and collaborators. The theme of influence of each other has created a dynamic way of collaborating which teases out everyone's voice and strengths.

What has it been like collaborating with the team on this project?

The team has been great to work with. In the first rehearsal l attended I participated in a movement warmup which I enjoyed (since I am a dancer as well). This gave insight from the point of view of sensation of the work through my body. Embodied design blended the worlds of the digital and physical in this case. It's a place I love to live in when I can.

What projects are you working on next?

After a very busy season of multiple projects of my own, including last week I presented an evening length dance and media work at the Museum of Science in the Planetarium with collaborator Violet Nox, my season is still not over yet! As the Arts Space Coordinator for the Somerville Arts Council I'm helping curate an evening of experimental music April 22 at our temporary location in Assembly Square. After that, I plan on taking a bit of a break and focusing on opening up a new performing arts space for Somerville in Union Square.
