Master Class with John Lam: An Introduction to Ballet Movement

Learn to move like a ballet dancer! Join the students of TDM 174PO: Performing the Orient in an introductory ballet class with former Boston Ballet Principal Dancer John Lam: learn to plié, tendu, pas de bourrée your way through the class. Following the 1.5 hour class, stay for a Q&A with John about his career as a ballet dancer.

Be prepared to move: wear sweatpants/workout clothes (no jeans, etc.) and socks or ballet slippers. No prior experience necessary; this master class is geared towards total beginners.

About John Lam

John Lam began dancing at the age of four at the Marin Ballet in San Rafael, CA.

He rose quickly through the ranks and was awarded a scholarship to attend Canada's prestigious National Ballet School before being invited to join the Boston Ballet in 2003, where he was promoted to Soloist in 2008 and named Principal Dancer in 2014, performing in leading roles and multiple premieres created on Lam. He is a recipient of the 2005 Princess Grace Fellowship and has been lauded by the Boston Globe as one of Boston Ballet's "most versatile and expressive soloists." In addition to his stage work, Lam has produced an array of independent dance films including Dance IsMovement in StructureSHE/IMoving pArtsThe GiftThe Air Before Me, and Quiet Beauty several of which Lam choreographed as well and have received critical acclaim at international dance film festivals. Lam appeared in the Disney film, The Game Plan, and performed the role of Ariel with the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s Production of The Tempest. Beyond his work as a dancer, actor, choreographer, teacher and director, Lam continues to bring authenticity and passion to his art making as a creative director, choreographer, actor, arts advocate, and model. IG@Johndilam
