The story concerns Bechdel's growing up in a family that owns a funeral home (nicknamed the “fun home”), her discovery of her own sexuality, her relationship with her closeted gay father, and her attempts to unlock the mysteries surrounding his life. As Fun Home progresses, the adult Alison is drawn deeper and deeper into her memories, finally entering them, desperate to reverse her father’s self-destruction. Numerous roles will be played simultaneously by both Deaf and hearing actors, with American Sign Language (ASL) at the artistic helm.
