The Harvard Black Playwrights Festival is a celebration of black theater-making showcasing original student plays. The weekend of programming will include staged readings of student-written work as well as events featuring accomplished black playwrights and theater professionals. Events are open to the public.
The goal of the HBPF is to celebrate the work being done by black Harvard students to push the boundaries of student theater inside and outside of institutional spaces. The festival is also meant to connect this work to the broader community of black theater professionals in Boston, New York, and beyond. We believe that black theater is necessary and powerful and we want to create a space to showcase student work, celebrate black theater professionals, and cultivate relationships across the community.
Esteemed guests will include playwrights Robert O’Hara, Kirsten Greenidge, and Eisa Davis. Featured student works will include Black Narcissus by Patric Verone ‘18, Passing Marks by Aislinn Brophy ‘17, Platforms by Gabby Preston ‘20, Akoth (screenplay) by David Mugi ‘20, andNadia Valcin Goes Home by Solange Azor ‘18.
