After a brief somatics workshop and a short performance, Whelan and Brooks will be joined by **Michalek**, **Ilya Vidrin**, **Jill Johnson**, and **Aysha Upchurch** to discuss how the intimate rhetorics of dance partnering can provide systematic frameworks for understanding communication between bodies more generally.  **ABOUT WENDY WHELAN**  
Wendy Whelan, widely considered one of the world’s leading dancers, has spent 30 years at New York City Ballet, dancing virtually all the major Balanchine roles, and working closely with Jerome Robbins on many of his ballets and originating roles in ballets by such notable choreographers as William Forsythe, Twyla Tharp, Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Jorma Elo, Shen Wei, and Wayne MacGregor. She was promoted to soloist in 1989 and to principal dancer in 1991. Wendy was recently appointed an artistic associate at New York City Center for two years, starting November 2014.

 **ABOUT BRIAN BROOKS**  
Brian Brooks is the inaugural Choreographer in Residence at Chicago’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance. This three-year fellowship supports several commissions for Brooks, including new works for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Miami City Ballet, and his own New York-based group. A 2013 Guggenheim Fellow, other recent awards include a NY City Center Fellowship, Joyce Theater Artist Residency and Mellon Foundation Creative Artist Fellowship. Brooks’ work has toured internationally since 2002 with presentations by BAM’s Next Wave Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, the American Dance Festival, and the Works and Process series at the Guggenheim Museum, among others.

 **ABOUT TDM 182A ART & EMPATHY**  
Taught by Visiting Lecturer and international artist David Michalek, Art and Empathy is a course that considers the potential and the limitations as well as the opportunities and the risks that are inherent in relationships between art and empathy.
