Join Latinx Movement Practice (TDM 149) for an incredible evening with Candace Thompson-Zachery. The first part of the evening will be a movement facilitation followed by artist talk, and then close with a Q&A with Thompson-Zachery. No previous movement experience needed to join or observe.
ABOUT CANDACE THOMPSON-ZACHERY
Candace Thompson-Zachery, a Brooklyn resident born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, is a dancer, choreographer, certified fitness professional and cultural producer. She is the founder of CanDanceFit, Artistic Director of ContempoCaribe, a choreography and performance project that embodies the plurality of experiences within the Caribbean Diaspora, and the Founding Executive Director of Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE (DCC).
Candace has had the honor of performing for major cultural icons in Trinidad and Tobago including Patrice Roberts, Machel Montano, Island People Mas, Peter Minshall and Request Band in Brooklyn. She taught Soca Dance for several years at the Mark Morris Dance Center inheriting the class from La Shaun Prescott, former dance captain for Machel Montano. She has since brought Soca Dance workshops to several institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Barnard College, Syracuse University, Oberlin College, Berkeley College and Virginia Commonwealth University. Her teaching philosophy grounds itself in a localized Trinidad carnival tradition, connecting its deep roots to its contemporary forms. Candace holds an M.A. in Performance Curation from the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance at Wesleyan University and has worked as a cultural producer and strategist on several notable projects. Most recently these include: the Caribbean Theater Project at the Martin E. Segal Theater, New York Caribbean Carnival for WIADCA Inc. (NY) and the performance series for ‘Look For Me All Around You’ by curator Claire Tancons for the Sharjah Biennial 14. Candace has been recently appointed Manager of Justice, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives at Dance/NYC - a non-profit umbrella organization for dance in New York City.
