HDC Master Class with Chanel DaSilva and Zack Winokur

Acclaimed artists Chanel DaSilva, choreographer, and Zack Winokur, director, are collaborators on The Black Clown, a music theater experience premiering at the American Repertory Theater (September 5-23, 2018). In this master class workshop, DaSilva and Winokur will bring students into the practice and collaboration of the company's creative team and ensemble members. After a movement warm up, DaSilva and Winokur will take class participants on the journey of what it is like to create a work by blending movement, music, and theater together.

Participation is free and open to students of all abilities and levels of experience, aged 18 or over.  Observers welcome.  Due to limited class capacity, online registration is required for both participants and observers.

Chanel DaSilva and Zack WinokurABOUT THE ARTISTS 
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Chanel DaSilva began her dance studies at The Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center and the Creative Outlet Dance Theater of Brooklyn under the tutelage of Jamel Gaines. Her training continued at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, The Ailey School, and Springboard Danse Montreal. She received a BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School, under the direction of Lawrence Rhodes. Chanel has performed works by Ohad Naharin, Eliot Feld, Doug Varone, Jose Limon, Jessica Lang, Alvin Ailey, Robert Battle, Camille A. Brown, and Lar Lubovitch. Chanel is a 2004 Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a 2011 Princess Grace Dance Honorarium Awardee. From 2008–2014, Chanel was a member of Trey McIntyre Project where she was the muse for many of Mr. McIntyre’s works. She now serves on the dance faculty of her alma mater, LaGuardia High School. In addition to being a dancer and an educator, Chanel has choreographed works for schools, universities, and dance companies across the country, including Idaho Dance Theater, Harvard University, LaGuardia High School, The Park Avenue Armory Artist-in-Residence Series, and The Juilliard School. Alongside her partner Nigel Campbell, Chanel is the co-founder and co-director of MOVE(NYC), a New York City based arts organization that provides Tuition Free dance and leadership education to talented NYC teenagers who are passionate and driven for a career in dance. DaSilva was an artist-in-residence at Harvard Dance Center in the Spring 2018 and created a new work on The Harvard Dance Project, along with choreographers Peter Chu and Shamel Pitts, which premiered in April 2018 at Farkas Hall. 

Stage director, choreographer, and dancer, Zack Winokur, was born in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from The Juilliard School and Concord Academy. Winokur's recent projects include a new production of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Cincinnati Opera, an immersive pairing of Gluck’s Orfeo and Matthew Aucoin’s Orphic Moment at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, Monteverdi’s Il Ballo delle Ingrate with William Christie at Juilliard, and Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at the Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam. His new company, the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC), which he co-directs with Matthew Aucoin, started a new annual festival, the Run AMOC! Festival, at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, in December, and held its first major teaching residency at Harvard University in February 2018. Winokur also choreographs Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Dutch National Opera in a new production by Lotte de Beer, Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie at Juilliard in a new production by Stephen Wadsworth, remounts his production of Ana Sokolovic’s Svadba at the Festival Ljubljana, collaborates with grime artist Pepstar on a short film, performs in Gerard & Kelly's Modern Living at the Mies van der Rohe Farnsworth House as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and gives masterclasses at the Dutch National Opera Academy and New York University. Winokur has worked on film with Academy Award-nominated director Mike Figgis. His choreography also has been seen in the music video The Virus for A Tribe Called Red; at David Lynch’s Club Silencio and the Centre Pompidou; and in installations that took over the entire Royal Opera House, Covent Garden over the course of three days.
