ABOUT MAHAGONNY; A SONG CYCLE AND SEVEN DEADLY SINS:
Mahagonny; A Song Cycle and The Seven Deadly Sins are songspiel[en] made between 1927 and 1933 by German theater-makers Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. They were created at home in Berlin and in exile in Europe. At the time they introduced new methods that these theorist/creators would continue to develop throughout their careers. Among these are experiments in the function of theater as a space for ideas and civic discourse and confrontation and the function of music as popular form and tool for dissonance within the theatrical medium. This production of The Sins of Mahagonny will bring both pieces to the stage in a contemporary context with songs, protest, dance, video and electronics for a 21st century expressionist Amerikana club-kabaret nightmare. A hearth-and-home dream-in-flames.
